centre: 36,550 MUR (\u20ac 700)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A three-bedroom apartment on the outskirts: MUR 28,700 (\u20ac 550)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to buy a property, expect to pay an average price per square metre of MUR 135,750 (\u20ac 2,600) in the city centre and MUR 104,400 (\u20ac 2,000) outside the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for energy bills, the annual cost is around MUR 2,600 (\u20ac (\u20ac0.84) per journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Express metro:<\/strong> Mauritius is also served by an <a href=\"https:\/\/mauritiusmetroexpress.mu\/my-journey\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">express metro<\/a>, which mainly connects Port Louis to Curepipe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The price of a ticket depends on the distance, but on average, you should expect to pay between 30 and 50 MUR, or approximately \u20ac0.60 to \u20ac0.95. You can also buy a <strong>MECard <\/strong>(rechargeable prepaid card) for MUR 150 (\u20ac 2.90), which offers up to 10% off your journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Taxi:<\/strong> Taxis are generally more expensive. The starting price for a journey is on average 198 MUR (\u20ac 3.80), plus 150 MUR (\u20ac 2.90) per kilometre travelled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ferry or plane:<\/strong> For inter-island travel (because even though we refer to Mauritius as \u2018the island\u2019, it is actually an archipelago), you will need to take a ferry or plane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>By ferry, for example, you can expect to pay around 3,500 MUR (\u20ac 67) for a return trip between Port Louis and Rodrigues.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>By plane, the price is higher, averaging over MUR 5,200 (\u20ac 100), with variations depending on the season (low or high).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Car:<\/strong> Finally, for motorists, the price of a litre of petrol is around MUR 69 (\u20ac 1.32). This is why private hospitals and clinics have sprung up to compensate for the limitations of the public sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To ensure they have good health coverage, many expatriates choose to take out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foyerglobalhealth.com\">international private health insurance<\/a>. They earn more than 62,650 MUR on average, or more than \u20ac 1,200.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given that the average monthly budget for one person, including all expenses, is around \u20ac 900, the average salary for expats allows them to live comfortably in Mauritius.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cost-of-living-in-mauritius-compared-to-the-uk\">Cost of living in Mauritius compared to the UK<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The cost of living in Mauritius is up to <strong>75% lower <\/strong>than the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foyerglobalhealth.com\/destination\/the-cost-of-living-in-the-uk\/\">cost of living in the UK,<\/a> including rent. This significant difference is mainly due to property prices, which are significantly higher in the UK (+100%), as well as the cost of groceries, leisure activities and certain outings, particularly eating out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it should be noted that the average salary in France is also higher (around \u20ac 2,500 compared to \u20ac 1,200 for an expatriate in Mauritius). Unsurprisingly, this also increases the purchasing power of French people compared to Mauritian residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It should be noted, however, that Mauritius is becoming <strong>increasingly expensive<\/strong>, particularly as a result of inflation and rising prices for imported goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cost-of-living-in-mauritius-compared-to-neighbouring-countries\">Cost of living in Mauritius compared to neighbouring countries<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-compared-to-reunion\">Compared to R\u00e9union<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Admittedly, R\u00e9union is not a country but a French overseas department, but comparisons of the cost of living are often made, given that the two islands offer a very similar lifestyle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here too, <strong>living in Mauritius is cheaper<\/strong>, with an average difference of around <strong>40%<\/strong>.
