Currency and exchange rates<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The official currency of Morocco is the Moroccan dirham<\/strong>, abbreviated to \u201cMAD\u201d and symbolised \u201cDH\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, 1 dirham is equivalent to 0.095 Euro. It therefore takes 10.54 Dirhams to get 1 Euro. (Rate as at 23 June 2025<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Residents mainly pay for their purchases in cash, and debit and credit cards are less widely used than in most Western countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The average rent for a studio apartment in a city centre in Morocco is 3,370 MAD<\/strong> (\u20ac320), and the price per square metre is 13,650 MAD<\/strong> (\u20ac1,295).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a national average, bearing in mind that prices vary in the cities most popular with expatriates, such as Casablanca, Marrakech, Rabat, Tangier and Agadir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It should be noted that properties located in certain prestigious neighbourhoods, such as Hivernage and Palmeraie in Marrakech, or Anfa and Oasis in Casablanca, are priced much higher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Energy bills remain lower than European standards. You can expect to pay an average of 370 MAD<\/strong> (35 \u20ac<\/strong>) per month in utilities (electricity, water, air conditioning, etc.) for an apartment of less than 100 m2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bus<\/strong>: Buses are the main form of public transport in the country. Fares vary depending on the distance travelled and the bus company chosen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, with Casabus, an urban journey costs an average of 5 MAD (\u20ac0.50). For inter-city travel, such as from Casablanca to Agadir, expect to pay around MAD 300 (\u20ac28.50) with the CTM company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taxi<\/strong>: the starting price for a taxi journey is MAD 6.85 (\u20ac0.65), plus MAD 6.85 per kilometre travelled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Train<\/strong>: the price of a train journey depends on the distance between the departure station and the arrival station. The ONCF (Office National des Chemins de Fer) offers several season tickets, such as the Navette Hebdo at MAD 340 (\u20ac 32.25) for the Casablanca-Rabat route in 2nd class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plane<\/strong>: if you want to travel to a remote area, you can fly. Expect to pay around MAD 1,200 (\u20ac115) for a ticket between Casablanca and Agadir with Royal Air Maroc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vehicle<\/strong>: Finally, expats can also choose to travel by car, filling up with petrol at MAD 14.25 (\u20ac1.35) per litre.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
