The reforms that have taken place since June 2019 have taken a step towards <strong>universal health coverage<\/strong>. To be eligible for the GHS, you must belong to one of the following categories:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Citizens of Cyprus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>European nationals holding a residence permit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Non-EU residents receiving some form of income on Cypriot territory<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Family members can also benefit from the same health plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-obsidian-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1b6281fa341272737d049ee1926d71bd\"><span style=\"color: #232323;\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-obsidian-color\">How does the public health system work?<\/mark><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">The health system is based on contributions (up to 2.65%of the gross salary for an employee). The beneficiary will have to choose a personal doctor who plays the role of attending physician. Registration with the health system is done with the latter or on the internet. Although the beneficiary has the free choice of his medical provider, the personal doctor must grant him first aid and guide him in the choice of a specialist doctor. The beneficiary can change personal doctor after 6 months of affiliation with the latter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">In the past, to gain access to public health insurance, Cypriot residents were awarded a health insurance card A or B according to the annual income of their households. This operation is no longer in force with the GHS, now you must fill out an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moh.gov.cy\/Moh\/MOH.nsf\/All\/9F394A91BBCE1CFB43257A1C00237DF0?OpenDocument\">application form for a health insurance card.<\/a> This card gives access to reduced rates for certain public sector services. Please note that this medical card is only issued to European citizens residing in Cyprus. Non-EU citizens still benefit from the GHS but not from the reduced rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-obsidian-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-90839eb40f5fcc0f44186ba84c7236a1\"><span style=\"color: #232323;\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-obsidian-color\">Care services supported by the GHS<\/mark><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">With the GHS, beneficiaries have access to the following care:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Visits to the personal, general practitioner and specialist (flat-rate contribution of 3 \u20ac for a consultation with the general practitioner and 6 \u20ac with the specialist doctor, against 15 \u20ac and 30 \u20ac for people not benefiting from the GHS)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Treatments and hospital stays<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Treatments in case of emergency (flat-rate contribution of 10\u20ac for care in the emergency department)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Laboratory tests<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Preventive medicine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pharmaceutical products (flat-rate contribution of \u20ac0.50)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Physiotherapists<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Midwives and nurses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dieticians<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Speech therapists<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">With the GHS the flat-rate contribution for a consultation with the general practitioner is 3 \u20ac and 6 \u20ac with the specialist doctor. It is respectively 15 \u20ac and 30 \u20ac for people who do not benefit from the GHS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Care in private institutions is not reimbursed and will be at your
